Aicardi-Goutières syndrome (AGS) is a rare, inherited disease that affects the brain, immune system, and skin. It's also known as pseudotoxoplasmosis syndrome, encephalopathy with basal ganglia calcification, or Cree encephalitis. AGS is caused by a mutation in a specific group of genes that causes the body's immune system to attack the brain's white matter, or myelin. This loss of myelin is responsible for the syndrome's symptoms.
